Gisenyi, Rwanda is just across the border from the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gisenyi and neighboring Goma are known as places of war and natural disaster. Gisenyi was a last holdout of the perpetrators of the Rwandan Genocide. The region has also experienced violent volcanoes in recent years. With two million wonderful, precious and weary souls in the region we couldn't resist to bring the refreshing goodness of Jesus Christ.
Right from the beginning we were stunned. Over 100,000 came to the festival the first night! We could see that the people were worn by war and extreme poverty. But there was a glimmer of hope in their eyes. They came to see something amazing – to hear words of truth - to melt in the presence of God – to be overwhelmed by power of the Holy Spirit – to be changed by the Gospel. Jesus says 'come to be all you who are weary and I will give you rest". He gave rest and so much more than we could have ever hoped for.
The challenges were many in Gisenyi. Technical issues, torrential rains (in the dry season!) and enormous crowd sizes we were not ready to accommodate all combined to bring us to the end of our own strength. But God showed His mighty hand. The response to the Gospel was epic. The healings and miracles were too many to capture in testimonies. We had over 350,000 people in attendance on our last night! God's power was on display in Gisenyi and neighboring Goma for the entire world to see.
